Fulton County Schools Parents, Superintendent Jeff Rose recently recommended a change to the district’s 2018-2019 School Year Calendar. At its August meeting, the Fulton County Board of Education voted to approve that recommendation. This school year, November 6, 2018 has been changed from a regular school day, to a teacher work day. March 8, 2019 has been changed from a teacher work day, to a regular school day. The decision alleviates safety concerns raised by some parents and staff, allows for additional staff training on safety protocols, and maintains instructional time for our students. Additionally, the Fulton County school board has expressed interest in addressing a long-term solution through the legislative process by removing schools as polling places. You may have heard your student talking about PBIS. PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. The goal of PBIS is to create a positive school climate, in which students learn and grow. With PBIS, students are explicitly taught the expectations and procedures for the school as a whole as well as specific "hot spots" where problems are known to occur. Through this explicit instruction, the students learn what kind of behavior is and is not appropriate in each specific area. You can help your student by reminding them about the three expectations in school: Be Ready, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible. Students are recognized for positive behavior with Bear Bucks. The Bear Bucks go into a classroom drawing each week and students are recognized on the news for outstanding behavior. Thank you for your support in creating a positive school climate at RNE! FitnessGram TestingDear Parent: As part of your child’s P.E. program and their comprehensive health and physical education plan, their level of fitness will be tested using FITNESSGRAM, the state mandated fitness assessment program. FITNESSGRAM is a five part comprehensive fitness assessment designed to measure cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition. Administration of this fitness assessment will be for all students in grades 4th and 5th. As part of this process your child’s height and weight in grades 1-5 will be confidentially measured and recorded to determine your students Body Mass Index. In grades 4th and 5th parents will receive a copy of their child’s FITNESSGRAM score report indicating their students Body Composition, Aerobic Capacity, Abdominal Strength, Upper Body Strength and Flexibility at the end of the school year. Data collection from FITNESSGRAM assessments will be used to create informed policies, programs, and curriculum and instruction decisions for K-12 physical education at the school, district and state levels. Individual student information will not be used as a part of this process. As the parent of a minor child, Georgia law gives you the option of NOT having your child’s height and weight measured at school. If you DO NOT want your child’s height and weight to be measured please contact Caroline Maynor no later than August 31 at maynor@fultonschools.org and title the subject as “opt out”. Please make sure you include your child’s first and last name along with teacher’s name. Caroline Maynor Roswell North Elementary Physical Education Have an announcement?
