Iowa Testing This week

*  MELLOW MUSHROOM RNE SPIRIT NIGHT- Spirit night is this Monday, October 21 from 5 - 9 at Mellow Mushroom (935 Woodstock Road)! Remember - a portion of all sales goes directly back to the school. Dine-in or carry-out only, and make sure to tell them you’re with Roswell North. See you there!

* UPDATE ON BOX TOPS- We’ve received a lot of questions regarding giving our teachers credit for your digital Box Tops. The great news is...YES YOU CAN! It’s very easy. When you scan your receipts, there is an option to  “Give Credit”. All you need to do is fill in the space with your child’s name, teacher’s name, and grade level. (Ex: William Bryant/NMaples/4) If you have already scanned receipts, you can still give credit to your teacher. Enter into the app and click on your submission, then click on the More Options icon in the right hand corner and click “Give Credit”. If you have further questions, please email Angela Bryant at randelab@gmail.com.

*PBIS WINNERS!-Congrats to all of our students that are in Black Bear Dens!  The Black Bears are our first den to win a PBIS parade.  They paraded through the school in their den color-orange and everyone in the school cheered them on! Their great behavior earned them this honor!

*IOWA TESTING NEXT WEEK- Grades 3 and 5 have IOWA testing next week on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and grade 5 also tests on Thursday. If you’re students are in these grades make sure they get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast before testing.  Unsure what IOWA testing is? The Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) is a standardized test of educational attainment that was originally developed by the Education Department of the University of Iowa. The test measures the skill level of students in the areas of Reading, Language, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science.

4. RISE AND SHINE! This month we would like to introduce a new attendance program called Rise and Shine to reduce unexcused absences by 3%. This program will encourage kids to be in class and on time every day. The goals of this program are below.
  • Reduce total absences and tardies. Starting total for absences is 5967. Or goal is to reach 5788 by May 2020
  • Reward students who come close to perfect attendance and achieve perfect attendance.
  • Increase school awareness about the importance of school attendance.
Classes will receive dojo points and other incentives for coming close to perfect attendance. We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. So here are a few simple tips to help get students to school:
  • Make sure your children keep a regular bedtime and establish a morning routine.
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • Ensure your children go to school every day unless they are truly sick.
  • Talk to teachers and counselors for advice if your children feel anxious about going to school.
  • Develop back up plans for getting to school if something comes up.

5. COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY- First Baptist Roswell is hosting a Community Conversation on October 16th at 6:30pm titled, "Navigating Anxiety with Kids and Teens." This event is not RNE nor religiously affiliated but we wanted to share the learning opportunity.

 7. BUS DRIVER APPRECIATION- Students and Parents - Reminder that Bus Driver Appreciation Week will be Tuesday October 15th - Friday October 18th. The RNE PTA will be providing a daily "treat" for the drivers. We ask that you spoil your Driver during this week. The Bus Driver favorites can be found on the PTA website and will also be sent home via a room parent communication. Please contact Amy Amorosso at amyamorosso@gmail.com with any questions.
Thank you for your participation this year as we celebrate these awesome drivers! What a task to move all these RNE students alone on a daily basis!

8. SAFETY AT RNE- Safety is our top priority at RNE.  We're noticing an increased number of cars pulling into the front RNE parking lot and allowing kids to simply run to the entrance of school.  This is not allowed. Car pool is the only place where a car can drop off a student.  This is for safety.  The time is about to change and the parking lots are dark in the morning.  Please do not drop off any students in any area other than car pool. ALSO- we do not allow parents to park in the lot adjacent to car pool and walk students to school by cutting through the car pool line to enter the school. Car pool is busy and chaotic.  Someone will get hurt.  Please do not walk through the car pool traffic to escort your child to the school door.  Please simply use the car pool line. Please don't text or surf your phone in car pool.Thank you!

9.  Board Member Katha Stuart, District 1, would like the communities which feed into Crabapple MS to be aware Doug Carey, Director of Capital Planning, will be her guest speaker at her October 16th Community meeting.  The meeting will be held at Roswell High School @ 6:30 p.m.  Mr. Carey will be available to answer any questions or concerns parents and the community may have regarding the Crabapple MS rebuild.

2. RNE KIDS ARE OPERA SINGERS!- On October 11, twenty Roswell North Elementary Chorus starlets are taking the stage at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center in the Atlanta Opera's Studio Tour debut performance of the opera, "Hansel and Gretel!" This is the first stop on the Atlanta Opera Studio Tour and Roswell North was especially chosen to be the children’s chorus alongside professional opera singers. What an honor!
To celebrate its 40th year on the road, the 2019-20 season features a new adaptation of Humperdinck’s enchanting fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel, in which students are invited to take center stage alongside Atlanta Opera artists. Suitable for all ages, Hansel and Gretel brings students on an adventure through a magical world filled with mystical forest animals, a captivating Sandman, and lots of sweets! Adapted and directed by Brenna Corner, an alumna of the Opera’s Studio Artist program, the 45-minute English version of Humperdinck’s classic opera teaches valuable lessons about listening, kindness, and not judging a Witch by her wardrobe.
